Todays devotion Title: A New House Reference: 2Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Message: When I was still a child I enjoyed playing with my siblings; our games included building small make-shift houses out of small sticks, paper, and dried grass that we gathered around the compound. It was such a memorable moment when we would finish constructing these houses when we would all get in and pretend to sleep away, trying to hide from the scotching sun. But interesting enough whenever the weather got bad we would run out and seek shelter at home. And come to think of it, none of us dared to spend a night in that ‘new house’ we had just built. Well I guess it was because deep inside us we all knew these structures were not safe enough to live in. Today I thank God that I have to find a suitable home for my wife and children to live in. A house they do not have to vacate whenever its night fall or when it rains. As an African man I am obligated to fulfill my duties as the head of the family. In the Scripture text above the Apostle Paul shares about our present life under the shelter we build. We live in a shelter that is temporal- the mortal body God has created, and given us. It’s a shelter we enjoy only for a short time when our health is good. And when sickness sets in which could even be a terminal illness the situation then changes. It becomes more less like the temporal structures my sibling and I used to build that we would end up vacating at the fall of the night or whenever the weather was bad. This sickness infringes on us such hard conditions that make our lives unbearable. Before you know it some of the systems are collapsing and shutting down. Then we start thinking of the moment when this structure will eventually wear out and we will be laid to rest. I have lived and seen many people go through these changes and I believe you could also be one of the people experiencing this change. But you know what; here is an encouragement for you. As Christ’s followers, God has built a permanent house for us. We shall someday resurrect as family in Christ Jesus; free from sin, torment, death and decay. Like our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall then be clothed with immortal bodies. We shall forever live in His righteousness and we shall be given a new home to which we are heirs and that is eternal life. Amen Dear Lord Jesus, as we celebrate your victory over death and sin, keep us reminded of your eternal promise of the resurrection of our bodies to a new where we shall forever live besides you. Amen. |
